Witness
Keith Lane
21 January 2023 – 5 March 2023
‘Witness’ charts the perceptual and emotional journey of artist Keith Lane over a period of 12 years (including a move from Sydney to Deloraine) and includes a series of incredible works in acrylic, oil and ceramic that explore various aspects of the human experience.
Across 18 carefully selected works, Witness explores three main themes: the interior/exterior of the mind/body, the natural environment, and the construction of culture. The earliest work in the exhibition is Arboretum (2010), an 18-panel acrylic/coloured pencil work almost two metres high and four metres in length that considers the confinement and control of nature within a man-made construct. While the latest piece, Eagle Hawk Neck 1842 (2022) is a direct response to Tasmania’s natural environment, looked at through the prism of this land’s history, and, as Keith puts it, “an emotional charge which seems to me especially raw, lurking beneath the surface of Tasmanian culture”
