Rapid Science – 2025 National Science Week – School Program at Hive

The Rapid Science program at Hive is available to schools and group bookings on weekdays from Monday 4 August – Friday 22 August. Allow approximately 1hr for a minimum booking of 1 activity, however groups can book up to three activity sessions during a visit with each activity taking approximately 1hr.

Activity types are:

  • Rapid Science Session
  • Planetarium show
  • Hive Access including Science Centre and Art Gallery. Note that the Musuem is closed during Science Week for renovations.

The Rapid Science program is designed for primary and high school students, this program will deliver high-impact, rapid-fire science sessions led by experts across multiple fields. Each topic can be adapted for specific year levels within the range offered. In 2025 we have the following programs available:

Our Sun (All year levels)

It’s a star – but a very special one for us! Lean some of the secrets of the Sun, and how it compares with other stars. If the weather is clear, we’ll safely observe the Sun and ty to find some sunspots.

Asteroids (all year levels)

Scientists think that a rocky asteroid was partly the reason that the dinosaurs died out. Find out what asteroids are, and how they are discovered!

Air pollution monitoring (Upper primary +)

Studying air pollution is increasingly important in today’s world, and here in Tasmania the Baseline Air Pollution Station at Cape Grim in the State’s northwest is performing important research.

Marine ecosystems (Upper primary +)

Informative sessions on the survival of marine species, explaining the effects of climate change and other factors that place them at risk.

Learning from Light (Upper primary +)

We’ve all seen rainbows before, but come to this special session to learn how scientists can learn a lot by breaking up light into its separate colours.

Pricing (Note that Supporting adults are complimentary)

1 x activity = $8 per student

2 x activity = $10 per student

3 x activity = $12 per student
