DESCRIPTION:Saturday 8 August 2026Studio 1\, Hive$60 per person (includes a light lunch) \nCreate a New Species in Clay \nInspired by the forms\, textures and patterns found throughout the Big Small Worlds exhibition in the Gallery at Hive\, participants will create their own hybrid organism using porcelain clay. \nGuided by ceramic artist Christie Lange\, this fun\, hands-on workshop encourages close observation\, imagination and creative experimentation through simple hand-building techniques. Participants will begin with a guided exhibition tour before designing and sculpting creating their own speculative creature or new species in clay. \nNo prior experience is required and all materials will be provided. \nImportant Information \n\nAges 12+\nPlease wear clothes you don’t mind getting dirty or bring an apron\nNo food or drink permitted in the clay studio\nA light lunch will be provided during a break on the Hive site\n\n*Please note: participants will not be able to take their hybrid creature home on the day\, as works will require approximately one month drying time prior to firing. Her practice explores restoration and renewal through close observation of ecological systems\, with a particular interest in lichens\, fungi\, bryophytes\, gastropods and soil communities. \nWorking primarily in porcelain\, Christie hand-builds intricate sculptural forms that imagine hybrid ecologies shaped by adaptation and interdependence. She holds a Bachelor of Contemporary Arts (First Class Honours) from the University of Tasmania and has been recognised as a finalist in the Women’s Art Prize Tasmania\, Bay of Fires Art Prize and Southern Ocean Art Prize. \nChristie’s work is on display as part of the exhibition Big Small Worlds in the Hive gallery on Level 1 from 1 August – 18 October 2026 \nThis is one of many event’s in Hive’s Seeds of Curiosity program which is part of National Science Week 2026.

The planetarium dome will feature Sarah Lloyd’s exquisite macro-and micro-photography of Tasmanian slime moulds in all their remarkable life stages as the music emerges from the extensive colours and effects of Garry Greenwood’s elegant 18-string Tasmanian Mountain Harp.
